As part of getting myself ready, I thought it wise to start familiarising myself with the official syllabus. IH Seville has a summarised version, grouping the guidelines under two main objectives. You can read them yourself here.

For those of you wondering, the acronym CELTA originally stands for Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults, but although the acronym is retained, it now stands for Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages.
According to Cambridge, CELTA is an introductory course for candidates who have little or no previous English language teaching experience. Why then is it much sought after even by experienced teachers? They must be doing something right, I guess. It is, after all, accredited by Ofqual (the regulator of qualifications, examinations and assessments in England) at level 5 on the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF). To get a perspective, a Bachelor’s degree is graded at Level 5/6.
So, does it make sense for an undergraduate to do a CELTA course? I suppose it does if one has little or no experience of ELT, but if you’re an experienced teacher? How much weight has CELTA got? Would employers equate it with a degree? What is the likelihood of you getting a job if you have a CELTA but not a degree? Could a CELTA, without a degree, get you into a Master’s programme? Or would a DELTA be better? DELTA is rated at level 7 on the QCF, which is equivalent to a Master’s. It’s all a little confusing to me at the moment.
